The most commonly used construction, and the default in this range. Full bore — the ball hole matches the pipeline — and it opens for re‑seating, at the cost of one body joint. 1/4" to 4" at 1000 PSI, plus a separate 1/4" to 3" range at 2000 PSI, the only variant here that reaches it.

What a two‑piece ball valve is

The most commonly used construction — and the reasons are all trade‑offs.

The two‑piece is the most commonly used construction type of ball valve, and it is the default choice in this range. It has two separate pieces: the first carries the body and one end connection, and the second fits into the first to hold the trim in place and provides the second end connection. The two are joined by a thread or by bolts.

Splitting the body buys two things the one‑piece cannot offer. It is full bore — the ball is over‑sized so the hole through it matches the pipeline, and the valve does not restrict the line. And it allows disassembly of the valve if the internal parts need replacing. The cost is equally clear: valves designed this way hold the potential of leakage where the two pieces are joined. A joint you can open is a joint that can weep.

  • Full bore, as standard. The two‑piece is the standard bore — at 1/2" the bore is 15 mm, matching DN15 pipe, against 9 mm on the one‑piece. Every size compared.
  • The only variant that reaches 2000 PSI. It is supplied in two separate ranges — 1000 PSI and 2000 PSI — with different dimensions and different part numbers. “2 piece ball valve” on its own does not specify which. The 2000 PSI table.
  • ⚠ One extra leak path. The body joint is the price of serviceability. It is a designed, gasketed joint and it does not normally leak — but if you want no body joint at all, that is the one‑piece.
  • Serviceable, but not in the line. You can strip it and re‑seat it — off the pipe. To do that without a line shutdown, you want the three‑piece.

1. Two piecesThe body joint is visible. The smaller piece screws into the main body and holds the trim in place — that joint is what lets you open the valve, and the one extra place it could weep.

  • Everything wetted is SS316 or PTFE. Body, cap, ball and stem in SS316; seat, seal gasket, stem seal and stem packing in PTFE.
  • The seal gasket is the body joint seal. On a two‑piece this part matters more than it does on a one‑piece, because it is what closes the joint between the two body halves — and it is PTFE, the same material as the seat.
  • The trim is identical to the one‑piece and three‑piece. Same SS316 ball, same PTFE seats, same anti‑static device. Construction is not a quality grade — it is a different answer to a different question.
  • The anti‑static device bonds the ball to the body. A ball turning on PTFE seats is electrically isolated; the SS304 device gives the charge a path out. Standard on this valve, and it matters on hydrocarbon duty.
  • The PTFE seat sets the temperature ceiling, not the stainless. Hence 150 °C, and hence the derating. The curve.

1000 PSI range — sizes and dimensions

11 sizes, 1/4" to 4". BSPP and NPT share every dimension.

Dimensions in millimetres. d is the bore through the ball — note that it matches the nominal DN at every size, which is what “full bore” means. L is face‑to‑face, H the height from the pipe centreline, E the handle length.

  • The bore column is the proof of full bore. 1/2" is 15 mm, 1" is 25 mm, 2" is 50 mm — each equal to the nominal DN. The one‑piece at the same sizes is 9, 15 and 32 mm.
  • BSPP and NPT are dimensionally identical across the whole 1000 PSI range — verified row by row. Only the part number changes.
  • ⚠ BSPP and NPT do not interchange. A mismatched pair engages and feels tight, then leaks later. Send a photo if you are unsure what is on the pipework.
  • Check the handle length E in tight spaces. At 4" it is 280 mm, and it needs a clear 90° sweep.

2000 PSI range — sizes and dimensions

A different valve, not a different label. 10 sizes, 1/4" to 3".

The 2000 PSI two‑piece is a separate range with its own dimensions, its own part numbers and its own IMPA codes. It is the only variant in the whole ball valve range that reaches 2000 PSI. It is also published with BSPP and NPT rows listed separately, because in this range the two do not agree at every size — so we have left it exactly as the manufacturer prints it rather than merging the rows.

  • ⚠ The range stops at 3", not 4". The 1000 PSI range runs to 4"; the 2000 PSI range stops at 3" (DN80). If you need 4" and 2000 PSI, this is not the valve — talk to us about high pressure ball valves.
  • The 1/4" BSPP length is printed as L = 6 mm in the catalogue, where the 1/4" NPT row shows 55 mm at the same weight — quoted as printed. Ask us to confirm the length before you cut pipe to it and we measure a stocked unit.
  • ⚠ Three bore figures differ between BSPP and NPT. 3/8" is 12 mm BSPP against 10 mm NPT; 2" is 50 against 49; 2 1/2" is 65 against 63. Small, but if you are sizing on flow rather than on thread, order against the row for the thread form you are actually buying.
  • Fully IMPA coded, both thread forms. 75 66 65 to 75 66 74 for BSPP and 75 65 89 to 75 65 98 for NPT — the most completely coded range on this page, which makes it the easiest to order for marine work.
  • 2000 PSI is still a cold rating. The same derating applies: about 67% of it at 150 °C. The curve.

Pressure–temperature rating

1000 PSI or 2000 PSI is the cold figure. Here is the curve, and the same curve as numbers.

This valve is used in service from −29 °C to 150 °C, and the environment temperature affects the working pressure across that range. The limit is set by the PTFE seat, not by the stainless body — SS316 is untroubled by 150 °C, but PTFE softens as it warms and the seat is the part holding the pressure. The same curve governs both the 1000 PSI and 2000 PSI ranges.

Read off that curve and interpolated along its straight section. Treat these as approximate figures for selection and ask us to confirm any duty close to the limit.

  • ⚠ A third of the rating is gone by 150 °C. 63 bar cold, 42 bar hot67%. If you sized on the catalogue figure and the line runs warm, the margin you thought you had is not there.
  • Nothing is lost below about 20 °C. The curve is flat from −30 °C, so ambient and chilled service get the full rating. Derating only begins once the line is warm.
  • ⚠ 150 °C is a wall, not a taper. The curve drops vertically to zero there. Do not design a small margin beyond it.
  • Rated to the catalogue figures, with the derating curve drawn to 63 bar. For duty near the limit, give us the pressure and temperature together and we confirm against the specific part number.
  • The same curve governs the whole stainless range, because it is the PTFE seat that limits, and every stainless variant here uses the same seat material. The range‑wide view.

Choose the two‑piece when

  • You want the standard, most common ball valve — this is it.
  • You need full bore: no restriction on an open line.
  • You may want to replace the internal parts at some point.
  • You need 2000 PSI — nothing else in the range reaches it.

Choose something else when

  • You want no body joint at allone‑piece, though it is reduced bore and cannot be opened.
  • Service must happen without stopping the line, or you need weld endsthree‑piece.
  • You need to divert or mix rather than isolate → L‑port or T‑port.
  • Water or air at modest pressure, on a budget → brass, at 300 PSI.
  • You need 1/8" or a compact body → SS316 mini or brass mini.
  • You need 4" at 2000 PSI → not this range; see high pressure ball valves.

What is a 2 piece ball valve?

The most commonly used construction type of ball valve. Is a 2 piece ball valve full bore?

The bore column in the size table proves it: 15 mm at 1/2", 25 mm at 1", 50 mm at 2". A one‑piece at those sizes gives 9, 15 and 32 mm.

Can a 2 piece ball valve be serviced?

Yes — it allows disassembly if the internal parts need replacing. Both body pieces carry hex flats, so it comes apart with spanners and can be re‑seated. But it has to come out of the line to do it. If seat replacement must happen without a line shutdown, that is the three‑piece, where the end caps stay in the pipe.

Does the body joint leak?

Not normally — it is a designed, PTFE‑gasketed joint. But it is honest to say the construction holds the potential of leakage where the two pieces are joined, and that is the trade for being able to open the valve. If you want no body joint at all, the one‑piece is a single casting with nothing to weep from.

What pressure does a 2 piece ball valve take?

1000 PSI or 2000 PSI — and they are two different valves, with different dimensions, different part numbers and different IMPA codes. The 2000 PSI range is the only one in the entire ball valve range that reaches that pressure, and it stops at 3" rather than 4". Both figures are cold ratings; expect about 67% at 150 °C. Why do the BSPP and NPT dimensions differ in the 2000 PSI table?

Because that is how the manufacturer publishes them, and we have not smoothed it over. In the 1000 PSI range the two thread forms are dimensionally identical at every size. In the 2000 PSI range three bore figures differ — 3/8" (12 vs 10 mm), 2" (50 vs 49) and 2 1/2" (65 vs 63) — and the 1/4" BSPP length is printed as 6 mm where every comparable row says 55 mm. Order against the row for the thread form you are buying, and ask us to confirm anything critical — we measure a stocked unit.

What are the internal parts made of?

SS316 body, cap, ball and stem (CF8M where cast); PTFE seat, seal gasket, stem seal and stem packing; an SS304 anti‑static device and packing gland; SS301 spring washer; SS201 handle. It is the same trim as the one‑piece and three‑piece. Full list on this page.

Should I order the 2 piece or the 3 piece?

Two‑piece unless the line cannot be shut down. Both are full bore and both can be re‑seated, but the three‑piece has end caps that stay in the pipe while the centre section comes out, so it prevents a line shutdown if maintenance is required — and it is the only variant offered with weld ends. The three‑piece costs more; one avoided shutdown usually covers the difference.

What sizes and threads do you stock?

1/4" to 4" at 1000 PSI and 1/4" to 3" at 2000 PSI, in both BSPP and NPT, held in Malaysia or Singapore. Tell us the size, the thread form, the pressure and the service temperature and we will confirm stock and a landed price.
