Marked along the length — not just on the bundle tag

Dural stainless tube is marked continuously along the tube with six things:

  1. Outer diameter
  2. Wall thickness
  3. Grade
  4. Standard
  5. Heat number
  6. Manufacturer name

This is the practical difference when a class surveyor or your own QA asks for traceability: you can read the heat number off an offcut instead of hunting for a tag. It is the same reason we are ISO 9001:2015 certified for the supply and delivery of hydraulic hardware.

Choosing between them

  • Tube is sized by outer diameter and wall; pipe is sized by nominal bore and schedule. They are not interchangeable even where the numbers look close.
  • Stainless for corrosion, hydraulic steel tube for pressure. Molybdenum is what gives 316 its corrosion resistance over 304.
  • 316 vs 316L — 316 carries more carbon; 316L is the low‑carbon variant, usually specified where the joint will be welded.
  • E355 vs E235 — pick on working pressure, then confirm the wall thickness for your size.

The standards, in plain terms

If your specification names one of these, this is what it is asking for.

The stainless side

  • ASTM A213 — seamless austenitic tube for boiler, superheater and heat‑exchanger service. If the tube ends up in a bundle or a coil, this is the one specifications call for.
  • ASTM A269 — seamless and welded austenitic tube for general corrosion‑resisting service: instrument lines, sensor lines, general plumbing in stainless.
  • ASTM A312 — austenitic pipe, seamless or welded, for high‑temperature and general corrosive service — ordered by nominal bore and schedule, not OD and wall.

The hydraulic side

  • DIN 2391 / EN 10305‑1 — seamless cold‑drawn precision tube: tight tolerance on OD and wall, and a surface finish that lets a compression fitting bite and seal.
  • DIN 2445 / EN 10305‑4 — the same precision tube family, specified for hydraulic and pneumatic power lines, where the tube is the pressure envelope.
  • Why precision matters: a hydraulic fitting seals on the tube’s outside surface. Ordinary tube with a loose OD tolerance can pass a pressure test and still weep at the ferrule — which is why the standard, not just the size, belongs on the order.
Why an exclusive brand

Ordering it right, first time

  • Tube: outer diameter × wall thickness, grade, standard and quantity — for example 12 mm × 1.5 mm, TP316L, A269, 24 lengths.
  • Pipe: nominal bore × schedule, grade and standard — for example 2" Sch 40S, 316/316L, A312.
  • Hydraulic tube: OD × wall, grade E235 or E355, and the working pressure — we confirm the wall against the pressure before anything ships.

The questions buyers actually send us.

Am I buying tube or pipe?

If your drawing gives an outer diameter and a wall thickness (say 12 × 1.5 mm), it is tube. If it gives a nominal bore and a schedule (say 2" Sch 40S), it is pipe. They are not interchangeable even where the numbers look close — the sealing systems and the tolerances are different.

What is the difference between 316 and 316L?

Carbon. 316L is the low‑carbon variant, specified where the joint will be welded, because lower carbon resists sensitisation at the weld. Much of our stainless stock is dual‑certified 316/316L, meeting both specifications at once — the marking on the length says exactly what it is.

What does “marked along the length” actually give me?

Traceability that survives cutting. The OD, wall, grade, standard, heat number and maker repeat along the tube, so a class surveyor or your QA can read the heat number off an offcut and match it to the mill certificate — no bundle tag, no guesswork.

E235 or E355 for hydraulic tube?

Pick on working pressure: E355 (ST 52.4) is the stronger grade, E235 (ST 37.4) the standard one, and at the same size the stronger grade rates higher. Send us the size and the working pressure and we confirm the wall thickness against the published rating before anything ships.

Can I get mill certificates?

Yes — ask on the enquiry. The heat number marked on the length is what ties the steel to its certificate, so state the requirement with the order and the paperwork travels with the material.

What lengths do you supply?

The standard length is 6 metres, held in Malaysia or Singapore and dispatched same or next working day. Tell us the lengths and quantities you need on the enquiry — one length or a full cutting list is priced by a product specialist within two working hours.

Is the tube seamless or welded?

It depends on the line, and the standard on the marking tells you. ASTM A213 is a seamless specification; A269 covers both seamless and welded; A312 pipe comes seamless or straight‑seam welded; and the EN 10305‑1/‑4 hydraulic tube is seamless cold‑drawn. If your specification requires seamless, state it on the enquiry and we supply and certify accordingly.

Can stainless tube be used on hydraulic pressure lines?

Yes, where the duty needs corrosion resistance — marine, chemical, washdown — provided the wall thickness suits the pressure and the fittings suit the tube. Send the OD, the working pressure and the fitting system you are using, and we confirm the wall against the published rating before anything ships.

Can I substitute A269 tube where A213 is specified?

Not on your own authority — if a specification names A213, the tube must be certified to A213, because that is the boiler and heat‑exchanger specification with its own test requirements. Where stock is dual‑ or multi‑certified the marking on the length says so. Send us the specification wording and we supply against what it actually calls for.

Do you stock grades other than 316/316L?

The Dural stainless range is TP316 and TP316L — the grades that cover most corrosive duty in this region. If your specification calls for another grade, ask on the enquiry: we quote it from the wider supply range, with the same marking and certification requirements attached.

What should hold the tube in place?

Why does the standard matter if the size is the same?

Because the standard is what fixes the tolerances and the testing, not just the size. A hydraulic fitting seals on the tube’s outside surface — ordinary tube with a loose OD tolerance can pass a pressure test and still weep at the ferrule. That is why the order should carry size, grade and standard, and why every Dural length is marked with all three.
