Tube is specified by outside diameter and wall thickness — so a 1/2" tube measures 1/2" across the outside. Pipe is specified by nominal bore and schedule, and the nominal size is neither the inside nor the outside diameter. Getting this wrong is the single most common reason a quote has to go back and forth.
Getting the specification right
Which line suits the duty, and the four things we need in order to quote it.
Which line fits the job
- Instrument and process runs — stainless tube in TP316/316L. Choose the finish on how clean the service has to be: AP for general work, bright annealed or 320 grit where surface matters.
- Flanged or threaded pipework — stainless pipe to A312, sized by nominal bore so it mates with standard fittings and flanges.
- Hydraulic power — hydraulic steel tube. E355 takes the higher working pressure; E235 is the softer, more formable grade.
- Water, gas and refrigeration — copper pipe in straight lengths, or pancake coils where you want a continuous run with no joints.
- Compression-joint assemblies — Walform tube. The profile ring is formed into the tube on the machine, so specify the tube and the DIN 2353 fitting together.
What to send us
Four things and we can quote without going back and forth:
- Size — OD and wall for tube; nominal bore and schedule for pipe.
- Material and grade — TP316L, E355, copper, and so on.
- Standard — ASTM, ASME, DIN or JIS, if the job specifies one.
- Quantity and length — total metres, and whether you want 6 m mill lengths or cut lengths.

Who makes what
- Dural — stainless steel tube, stainless steel pipe and hydraulic steel tube. Every length is marked with its heat number along the length, not just on the bundle tag, so a mill certificate can be matched to the length in your hand.
- AF Hydro — copper tube in straight lengths and copper pancake coils.
- RFS — the Walform system: the tube, the seals and the forming machines.
